Aligning Yourself for Golf Shots

After learning how to properly grip the golf club, where you aim your shot is extremely important in putting a good swing on the ball. Even if your swing is top notch, if you point your body and the club at the wrong direction then you are going to have a tough time hitting it where you want to.

You need your body to be properly lined up and working together. Your feet, knees, hips, forearms, shoulders, and eyes should all be running down the same line. You need to make sure that you aren't twisting your body awkwardly during the setup, because this will lead to swing faults when you start taking the club back.

You need to have a partner if you want the best way to practice when aligning your body. After the setup, your practice partner will lay a club across your shoulders, forearms or hips to make sure that they are pointing down your target line. Then you can make certain adjustments after you feel what the proper alignment is.

Beginning golfers usually think that their body needs to be lined up with their target. However, what you need to do is your body should be lined up parallel to the target. Your club will be pointing down one side of the green while your body is pointed down the other side.

Many golfers try to aim their club up with the hole when trying to hit approach shots, but this can be difficult to aim at a far away target. You want to pick out an intermediate target a few feet in front of your ball such as a twig, divot, or a specific blade of grass that is in line with your target to make it easier to aim.

Even the pros have to work on their alignment nearly every time they go to the range. Some pros would bring with them some sort of alignment tool on their every swing so that they can double check themselves being pointing in the right direction. It is not required to go out and buy alignment sticks, but it certainly does help. A compromise of using the clubs that are already in your bag can also be done.

A drill that is effective is when you lay a club down where your feet are and then another club six inches or so behind where the ball is. Both clubs will be pointing down where your target line so that you can get some practice in on what the club head and your feet should look like when your squared up to the target. To make sure your ball positioning is correct, you can also put a club running perpendicular to your feet.

If you are properly lined up at the target and you put a good swing at the ball, then it will translate into a good shot that ends up where you want it to be. This will help you with your game and makes it a lot more fun for you.
