Courage Im Not Sure This Word Belongs In Professional Golf

Jan 15, 2015 5:34 PM
Recently during the Tour Championship Golf Tournament and FedEx Cup finale one of the golfers Luke Donald was being interviewed. During the interview the commentator discussed the year Mr. Donald had just experienced referring to the way he managed his golf game. The word the commentator used to refer to his golf performance was courageous!

Im sorry but the word courage and professional golf do not go together. I understand that Mr. Donald may have had a tough year winning only one PGA Tour tournament and only making seven+ million dollars on tour this year plus leading the money list but give me a break!

Where does the word courage come into play when youre talking about an individual who plays a game for a living is the idol of many adoring fans and gets treated like royalty whenever he darkens the door of a country club? This sounds like a fantasy life to me not an individual having courage to somehow get through the year! Oh I forgot to say that Mr. Donald has not won his first major golf tournament yet! Of course that changes everything!

How foolish of me not to mention this heartbreaking void in his life. That must have been why the commentator brought up the word courage. What courage it must have taken to struggle through forget this year his entire life... without a major victory!? How can he wake up in the morning? Is there a rehab facility or a counseling center where he can go to get him through the trauma? Whats wrong with me have I no compassion no heart no common decency or respect for a mans dignity? Please forgive me for my thoughtless attitude and cold-hearted demeanor.

Im amazed at the nonsense that the media especially the sports media try to pass off to the public as a quality interview. You might be thinking so what who cares about what the media wastes their time doing? The reason I make such a big deal about this incident is that its far from an isolated one and that it gives us insight into whats being passed onto our youth. I believe most adults can distinguish the difference between worthless drivel and meaningful broadcasting. However are young people going to be able to understand real courage such as our soldiers police officers or fire fighters show on a regular basis from a multi-millionaire who didnt have a major victory this year? I believe this is a form of brainwashing although most likely its being done unwittingly.

I certainly have the greatest respect for Luke Donald as a professional golfer. Hes a very talented golfer whos accurate iron shots are among the best in the game. This was a commentary on the media and specifically the sports media not Mr. Donald. Mr. Donald was merely answering the questions that he was asked by the commentator. Mr. Donald never referred to himself as courageous. I believe most of the pro golfers are embarrassed by some of the questions posed to them and really dont know how to deflect attention away from some of the more foolish ones. The pros spend their time working on the mental aspects of their game not the mental gymnastics necessary to hush up the absurd media.
